If you’re using email as a marketing tool for your business, you’re always on the hunt for ways to create more income from your reader’s inbox, and a well-written welcome sequence will help you do just that.
When I finally got around to creating a solid welcome sequence, I began to see way more engagement and replies to my automated emails, which often led to bookings and purchases.
(I actually created a special label in my Gmail account for people who replied to my automated welcome email, so I could track how many of those ultimately became students or clients!)
This is one of my top tips when people ask me how to boost their income quickly.
So let’s get right into it, and talk about how to design and write the perfect welcome email sequence for your business.
What is a Welcome Email Sequence?
A welcome email sequence is simply the email sequence that goes out to new subscribers as soon as they subscribe to your email list. I help entrepreneurs to set up copywriting strategies and sales funnels that improve their client booking rate online.
And if you want to improve your client booking rate, you have to take advantage of what works and avoid what doesn't work. (Stop trying 45 different strategies at once and burning yourself out!)
One of the things that studies have shown really works for improving conversion rates and engagement with transactional email marketing are welcome sequences.
How Do Welcome Email Sequences Prime Your Audience To Purchase With You?
The moment a reader receives your welcome email is your best opportunity to build a winning relationship with them from the get-go.
In fact, with an average open rate of around 20 to 22 percent on regular emails (specifically for the health and fitness industry), it's incredible that welcome sequences have about a 50 percent open rate on average.
That means that new subscribers want to hear from you! They want you to engage with them and send them your best stuff right away!
When somebody opts into your list is when they're most excited about opening your emails and hearing about the offers that you have for them.
So if you're not taking advantage of having a killer welcome email sequence with clear calls to action, you're really losing out on a big opportunity to turn that new email subscriber - who's really excited about who you are and what you offer - into a paying client down the road.
You Have To Time Your Initial Welcome Email Just Right
How do you time your welcome email just right?
You need to make sure that your welcome email sequence goes out the second that somebody subscribes to your email list.
When you automate this, be sure to check the settings in your email marketing system to make sure that you have it set for the welcome sequence to start going out immediately upon someone opting into your list.
They shouldn't have to sit around checking their inbox for even 20 minutes in order to make sure that they got the offer that you said that you would send to their inbox.
Even a delay of half an hour might lose the interest of the new subscriber.
Think about it: They opt in and don't get your email right away, so they head off to do something else. By the time they get back to their inbox later that day, they've got 100 other new emails and you have all of a sudden fallen to the bottom of their priority list. They might have even forgotten that they subscribed in the first place!
People spend so much time clearing out the junk from their inbox, so you've got to make sure that your welcome email goes out immediately once someone subscribes to your list.
Create A Clear Call To Action For Readers IN YOUR Very First Email
The second key is that you want to make sure that you have an action that you call people to take in that initial welcome email.
Now the exact call to action (or CTA) is going to be different depending on your business, but one thing that you always want to encourage in this email is interaction.
So you might say, “Hit reply and let me know what your biggest struggle is with [thing you solve].”
Or maybe you're currently trying to build up your free Facebook group. So you might say, “Click this link and join us in the free Facebook group today so you can interact with your peers and get help with your [thing you teach]."
You want to make sure that you have a clear action that you're asking readers to take, even if it's something small.
This shouldn't just be a generic welcome email with no desired outcome - this email has a goal so spell that out for them!
Some examples of good CTA’s for a welcome email are: to reply with their answer to a conversation-starter question, book a free clarity, click a link to get more information, or connect with you on other places online (such as joining your free Facebook group).
Bonus tip: Use strategic subject lines to increase open rates for your welcome email
Readers will never follow your desired call to action if they don’t open your email, right? #captainobvious
So be sure you’re following your subject line creation method to craft a subject line that will get more opens.
Once you’ve drafted an awesome welcome email, using strategic subject lines will increase your open rate so that more readers actually see your content.
